The classic signs are a water bill that jumps without explanation, the sound of water running when everything is off, damp patches or lifting flooring, mould that keeps coming back, unusually green strips of lawn, or a hot water system that seems to run constantly.

There is also a simple check you can do yourself: turn off every tap and appliance, then look at your water meter. If it is still ticking over, water is going somewhere it should not be. That is the point to call, because the longer a hidden leak runs, the more it costs in water and in damage.
