If you can smell gas, get everyone outside, turn the supply off at the meter or bottle if it is safe to do so, and call straight away. For water, the tap at your water meter shuts off the whole house and turns most emergencies into a controlled problem. If you are not sure whether it can wait until tomorrow, call and describe it. Anthony will give you a straight answer either way.

First, stop the water or gas at its source. Your water meter has a tap that shuts off the whole house, and gas can be turned off at the bottle or the meter. If you are not sure where they are, Anthony will talk you through it on the phone before he arrives.

Then protect what you can. Move furniture and rugs away from the water, put a bucket under active drips, and keep everyone away from sewage overflow. Do not use taps or flush toilets if the drains are backing up, and never run a hot water system you suspect is leaking from the tank.
